Why use a water filter at all?

Our drinking water comes into contact with many different materials on its long journey from the depths of the earth to the tap. And these almost always leave their mark on the precious liquid - more or less desired. The quality of drinking water is measured in the waterworks and from the house connection onwards becomes the responsibility of the homeowner, so that the quality statement made by the waterworks is only half the truth. In addition, just as there is talk of "air aging", which is perceived differently from person to person, there are also individual preferences when it comes to drinking water. Even tap water that, from an expert's point of view, already meets all the parameters of the Drinking Water Ordinance and should be harmless to health, can contain substances that are undesirable and affect the taste. More and more households are therefore wishing to have their drinking water treated afterwards. This desire for post-treatment can relate to limit/guideline values of the Drinking Water Ordinance that are considered too high for one's own well-being or to water constituents that are not even covered by the Drinking Water Ordinance (e.g. drug residues, etc.). The numerous headlines of recent times about our drinking water and its quality speak for themselves. Whether "uranium in drinking water", "EHEC" or the contamination of our drinking water resources by agriculture, it is becoming increasingly obvious that central water treatment is reaching its limits. Post-treatment, decentralized, directly at the point of use seems to be one of the most effective and sustainable solutions. By purchasing a CARBONIT water filter you are opting for the highest water quality "Made in Germany".

Is lime-free water really better?

Removing limescale from drinking water is not without its problems. On the one hand, it is not technically that easy and on the other hand, the water chemistry changes dramatically. In particular, the pH value quickly drops into the acidic range. The water then loses its pH-neutral character. Limescale in water is not a problem for people. We certainly do not "calcify" because we drink lime water.

Nevertheless, our technical devices in the home suffer from very hard water. You can do something about this without changing the chemical composition of the water, but if there is a lot of lime in the water, i.e. extremely hard water, ion exchangers are a good alternative. Our lime filter for the tap, the SANUNO Kalk Kompakt, combines the advantages of the activated carbon filter with an ion exchanger. The unique Carbonit Kalk kompakt filter cartridge also enables the partial removal of lime. This keeps the pH value in the neutral range. A beneficial side effect - the activated carbon block filter also removes pollutants and substances that would impair the taste of the water.

AquaKalko, on the other hand, uses ceramic granules with a specially coded surface to initiate the process of heterogeneous catalysis. A similar process can be observed in nature with mussels and corals. The lime water flows around the AquaKalko granules. Small seed crystals of tiny size immediately form on the surface of the granules. These small crystals also immediately detach to make room for more crystals. The seed crystals floating in the water are carried by the water into all pipes and connected devices. They practically capture the lime in the water and therefore no longer adhere to anything in the treated water. The chemical composition of the water is not changed. Old installations and boilers can be renovated in just a few months, as existing calcifications and incrustations are also slowly removed and carried away in a gentle process. Chemical-free limescale protection is a recognized biotechnology. Since 2009, the EU standard EN 1988-20, section 12.7 (technical rules for drinking water installations) has stipulated that limescale protection devices with seed crystallization are approved for drinking water installations and correspond to the state of the art. Methods that work on the basis of seed crystallization meet the requirements of the "general rules of technology".

Which filter cartridge is the right one?

We are often asked which filter cartridge would actually be the right one.

Basically, all of the following Carbonit filter cartridges fit into all Carbonit Sanuno, Vario and DUO filter housings due to their design. However, choosing the right Carbonit filter cartridge is indeed crucial for optimal drinking water quality. Carbonit filter cartridges differ from other available filter cartridges in particular due to two key filter properties.

On the one hand, the filter cartridge's sieving effect creates purity for undissolved substances such as suspended matter, sediment, germs and bacteria. This "sieve" holds back all particles and contaminants via the respective size of the pore openings (similar to a sieve) and is specified in nanometers (nm).

On the other hand, the adsorption effect of the activated carbon removes dissolved pollutants (polar pesticides, agricultural residues, chlorine, drug residues and much more). The ability to adsorb these pollutants is becoming increasingly important due to increasing environmental pollution. It is called adsorptive retention. The adsorptive retention rate (AAR) indicates how high the retention is in comparison to the Carbonit NFP Premium filter cartridge.
