Buy oil separators for pleasure boats, yachts and larger ships

Oil separators are necessary for the use of a boat, yacht or ship. This is because impurities quickly accumulate in the bilge space under the bottom of the boat. The bilge pump ensures that the water is continuously pumped out, but for this to happen, the water must first be filtered because legal requirements must be met with regard to the discharge of water into bodies of water. The oil separator removes impurities such as dirt or oil from the water.

Buying an oil separator for your boat: These are the guidelines you need to follow

Leakage water (in wooden ships) or condensate (e.g. from air conditioning systems) collects in the bilge. In ships without their own engine bilge, this is contaminated by oil or fuel residues. Discharge into the water is subject to Resolution MEPC 107(49) of the International Maritime Organization. This stipulates that only water with an oil content of no more than 15 ppm may be discharged into waters within the twelve-nautical-mile zone. In water protection areas, as little as 5 ppm is permitted.

To meet these requirements, you should buy an oil separator. According to a European Union sports directive, this is actually mandatory for recreational boats and is part of the safety equipment on board. This prevents the risk of damage to electrical and electronic components such as batteries and safely drains away unused water without placing a great deal of strain on the water.

The function of the bilge pump filter/bilge water filter

The oil separators that you can buy from us are also called bilge water filters and use the chemical and physical properties of various liquids and their density. Oil and petrol are separated from the water and arranged in layers according to their density. The electrical and polar properties of water compared to the non-polar fat molecules do not allow the two liquids to mix. This means that lighter liquids, such as fuel and oils, can be removed in wastewater treatment plants and bilge filters by floating and separating.

The oil separator uses a material developed and patented in Germany. This attracts oil molecules and binds them permanently. One hundred grams of filter material in the filter cartridge binds and holds 0.655 liters of oil and thus complies with the standard issued by DEKRA. Extrapolated, this means that a bilge filter can hold the average amount of oil in around 12,500 liters of water. The filter is permanently installed between the bilge pump and the on-board water outlet. The full cartridges must be disposed of properly after use.

Buy an alternative to the oil separator: Wax cotton as a super weapon against oil and dirt

If you want to buy an effective product in addition to the oil separator, a new synthetic wax is also a good option. This was discovered by chance and can be used as a bilge filter, especially in sports boats. The wax wool is water-repellent and only absorbs the pollutants in the water. The effectiveness of the wax is its high and rapid adsorption capacity, which allows the material to absorb 6.55 times its own weight in chemicals. The fact that it can float even when fully saturated makes the DEKRA-tested material almost unbeatable as an oil binding agent. The filter wool can also be removed without leaving any residue and can be easily recycled.
